So, when they sealed the hatches and dived beneath the waves, was Morison's underwater science mission everything he hoped it would be? "I just found the whole thing exciting," he says. "The only space there's anywhere to do any science is in the torpedo room and so they removed a torpedo and I set up the science instruments on a bench there."
